When Might a Teen Benefit From Therapy?
Every teenager experiences stress, mood changes, and difficult moments. Therapy may be helpful when those experiences begin interfering with daily life, relationships, school, confidence, or a teen’s ability to feel like themselves.
Teens may benefit from additional support when they are experiencing:
Anxiety, overthinking, or frequent worry
Perfectionism or fear of making mistakes
Emotional overwhelm or difficulty regulating emotions
Low self-esteem or persistent self-criticism
School-related stress or academic pressure
Peer conflict, friendship changes, or relationship concerns
Family conflict or difficulty communicating at home
Grief, trauma, or other distressing experiences
Difficulty adjusting to a transition or major life change
Withdrawal, irritability, shutdowns, or changes in behavior
Sometimes teens can explain exactly what is bothering them. Other times, they may only know that something feels wrong, heavy, or exhausting. They do not need to have everything figured out before therapy begins.
A Relationship-Centered Approach to Teen Therapy
Teenagers need a therapeutic relationship where they feel respected rather than analyzed, lectured, or pressured to disclose more than they are ready to share.
Our therapists use a person-centered and developmentally responsive approach that allows each teen’s needs, personality, and goals to guide the work. Depending on the teen, sessions may include conversation, creative expression, mindfulness, emotional exploration, coping strategies, parts-informed work, or EMDR.
The goal is to provide a space where teens can develop greater self-understanding, identify patterns, strengthen emotional awareness, and build confidence in their ability to navigate difficult experiences.
Parent Involvement and Teen Privacy
Caregivers remain an important source of support for teens, but adolescents also need a degree of privacy for therapy to feel emotionally safe and meaningful.
At the beginning of services, the therapist will explain how confidentiality works, what information remains private, and when safety concerns would need to be shared with a caregiver.
Parent involvement is considered thoughtfully based on the teen’s age, needs, safety, and treatment goals. When appropriate, caregiver check-ins can help strengthen communication and support progress outside of sessions without asking the teen to give up the privacy of their therapeutic space.
EMDR for Teens
EMDR may be available for teens who are struggling with trauma, distressing experiences, persistent negative beliefs, or emotional reactions that feel difficult to move through.
Before beginning EMDR, the therapist will spend time building trust, understanding the teen’s history, and developing emotional regulation and grounding resources. EMDR is never something a teen is expected to begin before they feel prepared.
