Play Therapy for Children in Manassas, VA

Children do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling, what they have experienced, or why certain moments feel so hard.

At Integrated Play Connections Therapy Center, we provide Child-Centered Play Therapy for children ages 3–12 in Manassas, Virginia. Through play, children are given a developmentally appropriate way to communicate, process experiences, explore emotions, and build confidence within a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship.

What Is Child-Centered Play Therapy?

Play is one of the primary ways children communicate and make sense of their world. In Child-Centered Play Therapy, children do not have to sit across from a therapist and explain everything they are thinking or feeling.

Instead, the therapist creates a carefully selected playroom where the child can use toys, art, movement, imagination, and symbolic play to express what may be difficult to communicate through words.

The therapist follows the child’s lead while providing consistency, empathy, emotional reflection, appropriate limits, and a relationship in which the child can feel fully seen and accepted.

Play may look simple from the outside, but meaningful emotional and relational work can be taking place within it.

Children May Benefit From Play Therapy When They Are Experiencing

Anxiety, worry, or frequent reassurance seeking

Big emotions, anger, or emotional outbursts

Difficulty with separation, bedtime, or school drop-off

Behavioral changes following stress or a difficult experience

Grief, loss, divorce, family changes, or other transitions

Low frustration tolerance or difficulty recovering after disappointment

Withdrawal, shutdowns, clinginess, or avoidance

Challenges with confidence, self-esteem, or peer relationships

Trauma or experiences that feel difficult to talk about

Play therapy is not limited to a particular diagnosis. Sometimes caregivers simply recognize that their child is struggling and want help understanding what their child may be communicating.

What Can Play Therapy Support?

Child-Centered Play Therapy can help children develop greater emotional awareness, flexibility, confidence, responsibility, and trust in themselves.

The goal is not to make difficult emotions disappear. Instead, therapy provides children with a safe relationship and developmentally appropriate space to explore those emotions, strengthen their internal resources, and experience new ways of responding.

Because every child and family is different, progress may look different for each child. It may show up as increased emotional language, greater flexibility, improved confidence, more age-appropriate independence, or an increased ability to recover after hard moments.

What Parents Can Expect

Play therapy sessions are generally held once per week and last approximately 45 minutes. Many children benefit from approximately 20–24 sessions, although the length of therapy depends on the child’s needs, experiences, and progress.

Caregivers remain an important part of the process. Regular caregiver consultations allow us to discuss themes, changes, concerns, and ways to support the child outside of the playroom while still protecting the privacy of the child’s therapeutic space.

When appropriate and with written permission, we may also collaborate with teachers, school counselors, pediatricians, or other members of the child’s support team.
