What Is a Parent Consultation?

A parent consultation is a short-term service focused on helping caregivers better understand and respond to a specific concern.

Rather than beginning ongoing therapy for the child, the caregiver meets directly with a therapist to discuss what is happening, what may be contributing to the concern, and what changes may support the child and family.

Parent consultations are collaborative and individualized. They are not designed to provide a universal parenting formula or a list of consequences to follow. Instead, we consider your child’s development, temperament, experiences, relationships, and current environment.

Parent Consultations May Help With

Big emotions or frequent emotional outbursts

Power struggles, refusal, or behavior that feels defiant

Anxiety, clinginess, separation difficulties, or reassurance seeking

Bedtime, morning, or transition challenges

Difficulty setting limits while maintaining connection

Changes following divorce, grief, a move, a new school, or another transition

Questions about whether a child may benefit from therapy

Understanding what a child’s behavior may be communicating

Strengthening connection and communication within the family

Supporting a child who is already participating in therapy

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from a consultation. Many caregivers reach out because they want to respond more intentionally before concerns become more disruptive.

What Can I Expect?

Parent consultation is usually a brief service consisting of approximately one to four sessions. The number of sessions depends on the concern, the caregiver’s goals, and whether additional support is recommended.

During the consultation, you will have an opportunity to describe what you are noticing, what you have already tried, and what feels most difficult.

Together, we may explore developmental expectations, patterns beneath the behavior, caregiver responses, emotional needs, connection-focused limits, transitions, routines, and language that may help during challenging moments.

The goal is not to judge your parenting. It is to help you feel more grounded, informed, and confident in your response to your child.
